Technology integration in our classrooms can be fun, exciting, and empowering for both students and teachers. Edutopia (2007) states, “More and more studies show that technology integration in the curriculum improves students' learning processes and outcomes. Teachers who recognize computers as problem-solving tools change the way they teach. They move from a behavioral approach to a more constructivist approach.” How exciting that we live in a time when students can communicate with others across the globe about anything and get information at a touch of a button. Used in the right way, technology can enhance educational programs, changing the role of the teacher from a distributor of knowledge to a facilitator of learning.

Technology use in the classroom can motivate students, provide enhanced instructional methods for teachers, increase productivity for both students and teachers, and help students gain required skills in digital literacy (Roblyer, 2010, p. 16). In preparing our students for careers in the 21st century the use of technology in the classroom is essential. Students are expected to employ higher level thinking rather than simply regurgitate information. Research, reflection, collaboration, and communication are all skills the 21st century learner should routinely practice in order to be successful in school and also in future careers.

The use of technology is prevalent in our everyday lives. Today’s students have access to far more technologies than just five years ago and every year new technologies are entering the school scenes. Edutopia (2007) also states that as teachers take advantage of these emergent technologies, they can “support the curricular goals, and help the students to effectively reach their goals” by engaging students in creative ways and encouraging problem solving skills through technology integration. “Students are more actively engaged in projects when technology integration is a seamless part of the learning process.”
